The American Welding Society (AWS) D20 committee is developing a standard for the Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metal components. This standard is intended to cover a variety of powder bed fusion (laser, electron beam) and directed energy deposition (laser, electron beam, arc) AM processes. For each AM process, the standard will provide requirements for procedure qualification, including design and testing of qualification test articles, procedure qualification variables, and procedure requalification requirements. Additionally, the standard will provide requirements on AM machine operator qualification, fabrication, and inspection. A graded approach to requirements will be taken based on the criticality of the component application.
