The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is working on the design and development of standard test articles to support the qualification of metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) procedures and to accumulate material property data based on material, process parameters, specimen orientation, specimen location, and post-processing. The standardization of test articles is an important step in defining requirements for the qualification of additive manufacturing procedures; NNL’s efforts are intended to support standards development efforts, such as those of the American Welding Society D20 committee. NNL is in the process of building and evaluating standard test articles for powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition processes. Test article designs and evaluation results to-date will be presented.
