The concept that microstructures yielding improved properties can be obtained with AM technologies has been demonstrated. However, the capability to tailor these properties is limited by the numerous parametric constraints present in the SLM unit. This presentation will describe how a pulse-based SLM unit can be operated to fully capitalize on adjusting the microstructure to selectively minimize grain size, texture, residual stresses, etc. The case studies to be presented were based on Al alloys and stainless steels.
