3D printing has seen tremendous development in recent years with significantly improved accuracy, material choices, and printing speed. However, most existing technologies can only print one material by one 3D printing technology, which greatly limits the application scope of the applications. Recently, we developed a highly integrated 3D printer- a multi-material multi-method (m4) 3D printer. In this new m4 3D printer, we integrated aerosol jet, fused filament fabrication (FFF), direct write (DW), inkjet based polyjet, as well as complimentary technologies, such as photonic cure and robotic arm pick-and-place. One important feature of this highly integrated system is that it allows layer-level m4 printing, which enables seamless integration of different materials from different methods of printing. This talk will introduce this new system and the design considerations. We will demonstrate a few examples printed by this new system, such as a stretchable conductive ribbon, a soft crawling robots, etc. Future development of this m4 3D printer will also be discussed.
