The tools of digital fabrication are central to fab labs and makerspaces, giving participants hands-on, problem-solving skills in 3D Printing, laser cutting and marking, CAD design and other new technologies. This case study will review a paid internship program at Potomac Photonics, Inc. in cooperation with Fab Lab Baltimore at the Community College of Baltimore County [CCBC] whereby digital fabrication students work as operators in a manufacturing contract service provider. We’ll discuss program format and curriculum will also be reviewed. Outcomes will be described for both students and sponsoring organizations. The new Fab Workforce platform, linking manufacturers/employers, talent and hands-on training programs in Fab Labs and maker spaces will also be introduced.
