This presentation will explore the widening gap between additive manufacturing technology and the skilled workforce to drive it. Discussions will highlight the key requirement for detailed education throughout additive manufacturing disciplines to keep pace with rapidly evolving manufacturing processes. In addition to analyzing the lack of industry-endorsed “proof” for workforce-ready additive manufacturing skills, we’ll also begin to outline what formalized programs are necessary to address these challenges. Speakers will discuss why a holistic approach to education is best – with certifications on everything from the basics of 3D printing technology to specific industry master classes. Attendees will learn what specific certifications are necessary for industries ranging from aerospace and automotive to medical. In the end, participants will leave with detailed knowledge of how to best define their job-related skills path, understand the key certifications necessary, and start to pursue the formalized programs that can now dramatically increase their workforce employability.
Transforming theory into practice, we’ll also explore three post-secondary institutions implementing Additive Manufacturing courses that are culminating with certification tests. University of California at Irvine, Dunwoody College of Technology (MN) and Wentworth Institute of Technology (MA) have all integrated content into their curricula with the end goal of passing an AM certification test for students. The skills and added knowledge focused around the AM industry, applications and material capabilities are giving these certified students an advantage when searching for careers in the worlds of manufacturing, design, engineering and technology.
