Clinical Rehabilitation Engineer
New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System
Ben Salatin is a clinical rehabilitation engineer at the US Department of Veterans Affairs Spinal Cord Injury Center in Albuquerque, NM where he specializes in collaborating with rehabilitation therapists to find the right combination of assistive technology to empower Veterans to live independently. In 2012 he pioneered the use of additive manufacturing in a VA rehabilitation clinic to collaboratively design custom assistive technology with Veterans and their therapists. This clinical experience lead Ben to explore how additive manufacturing was being used in other areas of healthcare. He recognized that the VA has the opportunity to become a leader in the innovative use of additive manufacturing within healthcare but that there was minimal understanding within the agency from top to bottom as to the technology’s practical uses within healthcare. He created an internal additive manufacturing user group of members from prosthetics, rehabilitation, radiology, surgery, engineering and VA headquarters to help further staff education within the VA and support wider implementation of additive manufacturing across disciplines.
