3D Printing on Ice!

Recently researchers have developed a technique for 3D printing ice. This ice is reinforced with natural fibers, allowing users to create sustainable structures out of this material that are easy to build and break down.

This method to 3D print ice was developed by the U.S. Army ERDC — Engineer Research and Development Center. Within military operations, this research will help provide units with the means to quickly construct shelter in cold regions in lieu of conventional construction options, which are often impossible in such low temperatures.

In addition to being sustainable, these shelters will also help minimize exposure to cold temperatures, reducing injuries and improving conditions for military personnel. Logistically, the ability to 3D print ice and snow also lightens the cargo load, reducing the amount of construction materials needed.

The ERDC plans to continue testing 3D printed ice in the cold room facilities located at the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory — a collaborator on the project. Who knows what other innovative use cases researchers will find for 3D printed ice?
