There has arguably been too much emphasis on the minutia of the additive manufacturing process over the last thirty years without a corresponding focus on developing the business integration strategies needed for successful technology adoption. This presentation provides a step-by-step approach to overcoming the barriers to technology adoption for 3D printing inherent in commercial practice. It identifies three distinct stages that a company should navigate for the successful integration of the technology without causing internal disruption, and potential damage to markets and supply chains. It also discusses the priorities and challenges at each stage and explains how to build the necessary breadth of product design expertise needed to maximize the technology at each level of integration.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to build a company strategic plan for working with 3D
  • Upon completion, participants who are product designers will be able to create a skills development plan for working with 3D printing.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to identify where they, or the company they work with, is positioned on the 3D printing technology adoption journey provided in the presentation.
