2021 was a pivotal year for additive manufacturing for medical applications. The industry is expanding beyond 3D-printed surgical guides and models, metal and polymer implants are seeing strong growth, and we are getting closer to the reality of 3D-printed tissues. Advances in engineering and biology are catching up to the longstanding promise of huge healthcare markets for additive. Hardware giants are increasingly acquisitive with intentional medical strategies, and new companies are emerging in biofabrication and 3D-printable biomaterials. We will discuss why now is the time for additive in medical – how we got here, what’s happening now, and where we are headed in the next decade.
