Being agile in the production of end components by using additive manufacturing (AM) has been part wishful narrative for many decades of the AM community. Over the last few years, the AM industry has significantly changed. The technology has matured, new technologies have been added and costs per part have gone down. When and where does it make sense to use AM for production in what kind of numbers? What are the hidden cost drivers for both traditional manufacturing as opposed to AM? How have recent supply chain disruptions made AM more cost attractive? What do we see in the future for using AM to supplement production?
