Generative design is the automatic process of generating optimum feasible designs from a set of performance requirements and design rules. The generated organic designs can be printed using additive manufacturing. The challenge is in selecting the best design out of several hundreds of designs. Artificial intelligence can use 3D deep learning technology to mix art and business with design. Deep learning shape detection can evaluate the artistic grade of a design. Neural networks can be trained from the large databases of existing parts to compute the cost, life and performance of designs.
The current state, the research needs and required enhancements of the generative design tools will be outlined.
