Generative design is the automatic process of generating optimum feasible designs from a set of performance requirements and design rules. The generated organic designs can be printed using additive manufacturing. The challenge is in selecting the best design out of several hundreds of designs. Artificial intelligence can use 3D deep learning technology to mix art and business with design. Deep learning shape detection can evaluate the artistic grade of a design. Neural networks can be trained from the large databases of existing parts to compute the cost, life and performance of designs.

The current state, the research needs and required enhancements of the generative design tools will be outlined. The generative design tools of the near future will produce a tsunami of change in the design process. Examples of light weighting helicopter components using generative design, lattice structures and additive manufacturing will be presented. An example of how to select, design and simulate an architected lattice structure that has zero coefficient of thermal expansion will be also presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of architected material and their remarkable potential of generating high performance designs.
  • Get inspiration, not just information, on how to utilize architected materials.
  • Understand the design strategies and digital manufacturing techniques on how to select, design and simulate architected lattice structures.
