Much has been said about sustainability and eco-friendly approach to designing and manufacturing goods. Unfortunately, more has been said than done on this topic. There is a clear opportunity in the additive manufacturing industry to rise above the 'feel-good' statements and unsubstantiated claims and take action. We have a unique opportunity to (1) reduce energy emission per part produced, (2) reduce carbon footprint by eliminating waste and reducing transportation costs, (3) reduce material usage via topology optimization, and (4) integrate sustainability into design and manufacturing process. Designing for Additive Manufacturing is no longer enough. We need to reframe our approach and start Designing for Sustainability.
