Intelligent Digital Production Using the Divergent Adaptive Production System

Divergent Technologies was founded with the vision of a clean sheet architecture, systems-level approach to a sustainable, intelligent digital manufacturing system. Rather than focusing on integrating and improving upon existing point solutions and analog architecture as a start to digital manufacturing, the Divergent approach targets cost and performance objectives at a total system level — multi-objective optimized design, purpose-designed materials, tool-less AM, and automated fixture-less assembly — and uses a technology agnostic architecture. Digital design based on high performance computing power enables Pareto Optimization efficiency across all hard and soft constraints using purpose-designed materials for a given application. That design is materialized at an industrial rate and a competitive cost; this requires designing and integrating AM systems that can achieve the necessary total cost productivity. The structures are further assembled without design specific tooling. 

Divergent has invented, built, and is operating the first such intelligent digital production system. Divergent has over six major OEM customers with the first volume production builds of vehicles having SOPs in 2022. The digital manufacturing transformation has been slow to arrive and less impactful than advertised, but all the key elements are ready for scaling now through the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS). Over the next decade, focused “Skunk Works”-like teams will leverage digital design to fundamentally alter the DNA of each industrial sector, driving a massive cycle of business model adaptation and innovation and creating novel ecosystem opportunities for localized production and closed-looping of material and energy.
