Unit Head, Biomechanical Development and Applied Computational Engineering
Mayo Clinic
Amy Alexander MS, is Unit Head of Mechanical Development and Applied Computational Engineering in Mayo Clinic’s Division of Engineering (DOE). In this role, she supports the teams that bridge the additive manufacturing (AM) and other mechanical engineering capabilities of the DOE with clinical, research, and educational needs. As a first-line manager, she supports a team of mechanical engineers and designers to bring medical innovators’ ideas to life. Prior to this assignment, Amy was a Senior Biomedical Engineer in the Mayo Clinic Department of Radiology’s Anatomic Modeling Unit (AMU). She helped build the lab that uses advanced medical software to convert 2D radiological imaging data into 3D printed patient-matched anatomic models and surgical guides that help surgeons prepare for, practice, and perform complex procedures. Amy is past Chair of the Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME) Healthcare AM Advisory Group which works to build openly accessible educational content about medical AM and promote workforce development opportunities. She is a longstanding member of Radiological Society of North America’s 3D Printing in Medicine Special Interest Group (RSNA 3D SIG) and the SIG’s Education Committee. Amy is a frequent co-author of medical 3D printing peer-reviewed papers, and a long-term reviewer for Springer’s 3D Printing in Medicine Journal, among others. She serves as a member of Biomedical Engineering Industrial Advisory Committees for several universities and is a frequent lecturer on medical AM. In 2019, she was recognized as one of 14 international recipients of the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer (OYME) award. She holds certificates in Additive Manufacturing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and SME. Amy holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).
