Daniel Sanders, PhD

Affiliate Professor
University of Washington Mechanical Engineering Dept.

Dan Sanders started his career in aerospace as a machinist over 35 years ago. Since then he has been involved in a variety of metals materials and process development activities, with a focus in manufacturing using superplastic materials. He is a strong advocate of lifelong learning, completing a BSME, an MS Engr. Tech. and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington (2008), all while working full-time at Boeing. Dan is currently working to develop innovative titanium manufacturing technologies to reduce the buy-to-fly material requirements with processes such as friction stir welding, laser welding, superplastic forming, diffusion bonding, linear friction welding, powder metal compacting/sintering and various additive manufacturing processes. As a hobby, Dan enjoys tunneling in his hard rock gold mine located in the Cascade Mountain Range of Washington State and spends weekends at his home in Liberty, WA, where he is also a volunteer firefighter.
