Dennis Harwig is recognized as an international expert in arc welding processes, automation and structural metal fabrication. He has a strong background in technical standards, product engineering, project management, cross-functional team building and business development. He has broad knowledge in material joining technologies, advanced process development, product development and lab testing methods. In his current role, his research focuses are arc welding process innovation, laser & arc directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing processes and computer aided robotic process modeling.
Dennis gained broad industrial experience working at General Electric Astrospace, Babcock & Wilcox, and Thermodyne Industries, where he served as a variety of roles in engineering, program management and executive leadership. At EWI, he has filled many roles including Arc Welding Principal Engineer; Cooperative Research Program (CRP) Manager; Technology Leader for Arc Welding Materials and Automation; and Business Development Director. In 2013, Dennis left EWI to become the Chief Technology Officer for the American Welding Society (AWS), leading the organization’s standards and education programs. In 2016, he joined The Ohio State University’s welding engineering program to serve as both the LIFT Innovation Institute’s Chief Innovation & Technology Officer and as Adjunct Professor in the College of Engineering. Dennis transitioned in 2018 to a joint appointment role at both OSU and EWI. He now serves as Research Associate Professor in Welding Engineering (OSU), Senior Technology LeaderAdvisor for arc welding and DED process innovation (EWI), and Director for University Research (EWI). He is also involved with strategic business development at EWI.
