Dr. James Siegenthaler is a research scientist at the Diamond Technologies division of Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest. He joined Fraunhofer after graduating with a PhD in analytical chemistry, focusing on instrument development and material characterization for electrochemical neurotransmitter measurement. During his PhD, James fell in love with additive manufacturing, designing and fabricating custom electrode holders and other instrument adapters for his research. At Fraunhofer he leads two teams, focusing on metal additive manufacturing and diamond electrodes for electrochemical measurement. While managing the additive group, he leads a team to develop and optimize metal fused filament printing where they focus on vacuumless sintering to increase the accessibility of metal printing. Briefly, they are focusing on correlating printing parameters and processing parameters to yield reproducible metal components with high density. He additionally works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team as part of the Fraunhofer network to push additive manufacturing to the next limits. During his spare time, James is 3D printing accessories for his house and out in the forest exploring with his dog and family!
