Lara Liou, PhD, is the materials engineering leader within the GE Aviation Additive Integrated Product Team serving as a critical link between the Supply Chain and Engineering divisions in the cross-functional definition of GE Aviation’s additive manufacturing strategy. Her global team of engineers supports the full engine life cycle from new technology introduction where the material and manufacturing methods are selected through fielded product where part performance matters. They also support the full component manufacturing process from powder to shipped part. This holistic life cycle perspective at the intersection of manufacturing and engineering provides unique insight to the value, challenges and proliferation of additive manufacturing. Liou joined GE Aviation in 2010 after obtaining her doctorate at Cornell University and conducting postdoctoral research at MIT. Throughout her time at GE, Liou has worked in material and process engineering with increasing responsibility. She began her GE career in polymer composite applications leading introduction of new raw materials and parts through maturation of technical and manufacturing readiness, qualification of suppliers and processes and engine certification. Liou then turned her focus to ceramic composite materials where she championed a digital manufacturing culture enabling application of data science to production engineering challenges. For the past three years, Liou has led the additive manufacturing focused materials and process engineering teams focused on strategic maturation and implementation across GE Aviation’s AM applications.
