Dr. Pavel Ikonomov is professor in the Engineering Design, Manufacturing and Management Engineering Department at Western Michigan University. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Technical University of Varna and his M.E. in mechanical engineering and manufacturing technology from the Technical University of Varna. His M.S. in mechanical engineering was earned from Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, and his PhD in precision manufacturing engineering from Hokkaido University, Japan.
Dr. Pavel Ikonomov worked for several years as a chief mechanical engineer in a petroleum company and assistant professor at the Technical University of Varna - Bulgaria. Later he heldpositions as CTO at Virtual Reality Center Yokohama - Japan, associate professor at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology - Japan, and a visiting professor at UCLA and National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST). He has extensive industrial and teaching experience indifferent countries, university research centers, and companies. Dr. Ikonomov has contributed significantly to the development of new data exchange standards working on establishing the STEP standard at Hokkaido University, Japan, and information exchange between design applications and the virtual environment at NIST. He is considered an expert in CAD/CAM, virtual reality simulations for industry and nanomanufacturing, and 3D printing. Dr. Ikonomov has published more than 160 papers in journals, proceedings, chapters in books and has several patents (the latest two in 3D metal printing).
