Professor Il Yong Kim received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from KAIST and has worked as a postdoctoral researcher and course instructor at MIT. Dr. Kim is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. He is the principal investigator at the Structural and Multidisciplinary Systems Design (SMSD) Lab at Queen’s University, specializing in advanced finite element analysis and multi-disciplinary design and optimization. The SMSD lab has developed advanced topology optimization tools in design for additive manufacturing topics including support structure minimization, build orientation optimization, part consolidation, infill optimization, and fibre reinforced additive manufacturing. Dr. Kim and his research team have applied these tools to practical design problems in collaboration with industry partners including Bombardier, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Korean Institute of Industrial Technology, and ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research.
